On the medallions adorning the bottom of the saucer and the bottom of the piece known as a Calabre cup, André Vincent Vieillard endeavoured to paint rural emblems depicting work in the fields and the summer harvest. This poetic treatment of rural work is part of the fashionable interest in nature and gardening praised by thinkers of the second half of the 18th century, as in Rousseau's Nouvelle Héloïse. The precise polychrome decorations, combined with the finesse of the object, make this cup and its saucer a distinguished work amongst the museum's porcelain collections. The part with mosaic patterns bordering the plate is most certainly the work of another artist from the Sèvres factory.
