Reynolds is one of the most famous portrait painters in 18th century English painting. The large proportion of English works in the museum's collection makes it unique and reflects Ernest Cognacq's interest in artistic productions from across the Channel.

His role models generally belonged to the social elite of his time. Aristocrat Robert Henley was a member of the Whig Party, a liberal political party with the majority in the English Parliament. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland for a few months between 1783 and 1784. His portrait by Reynolds, the first in a series, was done shortly before this term of office over Ireland. The tight oval frame particularly emphasizes the character's energy and determination. Robert Henley’s somewhat distant gaze and confident expression go hand in hand with his social standing, which is also recalled by his trimmed jacket and the Order of the Thistle. Reynolds painted the face and garment with the same large, solid brush strokes, successfully combining the model’s authority and proximity.
