This sofa is part of a suite of flat-backed (à la Reine) pieces that were designed to be placed against a wall or panelling, unlike seats with curved (cabriole) backs, which could be placed anywhere in the room.
This sofa is typical of Louis XV style. It has a flat back that curves at the top and its legs are curved in an S-shape. They are connected by ribbed arm posts with scroll designs that are in line with the legs. The carvings are inspired by naturalism. It bears the mark of the Lelarges, a renowned 18th century family of joiners that spread over three generations and who all used the same stamp.
