Frances Maria Kelly was a famous actress from London who worked between 1810 and 1840. She appeared in many English tragedies, most notably in Shakespearean plays. She has been identified in this miniature thanks to two other portraits held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Here, she is depicted in a white dress, standing in front of a balustrade and shielding her eyes from the sun with her right hand.
It has been possible to date this work to around 1815 based on the clothes Frances Maria Kelly is depicted wearing. It has been attributed to H. Millett, a miniaturist about whom little is known other than that he exhibited work at the Royal Academy between 1809 and 1817.
